After early uncertainty regarding this year’s venue, Texas Camp will make a triumphant return to its longtime and beloved home, Greene Family Camp near Bruceville, Texas, this November 24-27, 2011.
We are thrilled to confirm that the marvelously talented husband-and-wife team of Cristian Florescu and Sonia Dion will join us from Montreal to present a varied program of line and couple dances from Romania, a fascinating Romanian culture session and a lively international dance class for children. Sonia and Cristian’s sparkling energy and friendly, participatory style make them favorites wherever they appear, and we can’t wait to welcome them back to Texas. Joining them on our faculty is Shirley Johnson, reprising her much-acclaimed debut last year as our teacher of international song. We are delighted to once again feature the talented and dedicated Don Weeda as Camp Band Director. Chef Laura LaGue is also returning to lay our tables with her famously delicious ethnic cooking.
Afternoon delights will include a Contra Session featuring the Homegrown Contra Band; an expanded version of the popular Bruceville Roadhouse presentation of couple dances from everywhere and everywhen; plus the brand-new Alternative Hour, a high-energy lark featuring folk dance standards done to alternate versions of familiar tunes and/or new and different tunes altogether — don’t miss it.
Parties? Oh yes! Polish up your spurs and fluff up your petticoats for Thursday’s shindig, “Wild West — Yee Haw!” On Friday, be prepared to dance your moccasins off as we celebrate a joyous “Romanian Holiday.” And on Saturday, break out your favorite, most outlandish and colorful folk costume to become part of the swirling global color of “It’s a Small World.”
And for your shopping pleasure, the wonderfully eclectic Balkan Bazaar is returning from North Carolina to tempt us. To whet your appetite with some advance browsing through their mountain of folk-friendly treasures, please visit www.balkanbazaar.com.
Do mark your calendars and plan to join us for a fun and fabulous Texas Camp 2011. See you there!
